Drinking water risk in the Central Valley

A new report says one in ten people living in parts of the Central Valley are at risk from cancer-causing chemicals in their drinking water.

That 10% translates to roughly 250,000 people that might be exposed to too much of what’s called “nitrate” in their drinking water. Nitrate is a substance essential to plant growth, but linked to cancer, thyroid problems, and reproductive issues in humans.

“We’re set up here for a really perfect storm,” said Blake Sanden, an irrigation expert at the University of California Extension Cooperative in Bakersfield.
